Top Five Dino Buzzati Books
(It’s a sign of the high regard I have for Buzzati that I had trouble narrowing this list down to five titles, though I‘ve read only the nine books of his that are available in English, plus I miracoli di Val Morel, worth owning for Buzzati’s illustrations even if, like me, you can’t decipher the text. The three English-language collections of his short stories are equally magnificent, and I couldn’t figure out how to choose between them (though I have a soft spot for the recent Ecco edition of Catastrophe, for which I wrote the preface). A Collected Stories of Dino Buzzati, were such a book to be published in English, would rank second on my list, behind only The Tartar Steppe.)
