Ten Favorite Movies of the 1980s

(After reading Jordan Ruimy’s critics’ poll, I started thinking about what my favorite movies of the 1980s might be. My list seems way too heavy on American movies and movies from the very tail end of the decade, but with profound subjectivity and in alphabetical order, here it is.)

  • The Chocolate War (directed by Keith Gordon, 1988)

  • Crossing Delancey (directed by Joan Micklin Silver, 1988)

  • Do the Right Thing (directed by Spike Lee, 1989)

  • Jesus of Montreal (directed by Denys Arcand, 1989)

  • Kiki's Delivery Service (directed by Hayao Miyazaki, 1989)

  • Local Hero (directed by Bill Forsyth, 1983)

  • Miracle Mile (directed by Steve De Jarnatt, 1988)

  • The Quiet Earth (directed by Geoff Murphy, 1985)

  • Running on Empty (directed by Sidney Lumet, 1988)

  • The Thing (directed by John Carpenter, 1982)
