Ten Favorite Celebrity Albums

(I’m restricting myself here to artists whose fame as actors or models predated their fame as musicians, and excluding musicians who went on to dabble in acting. That means, in the first case, no, say, Rick Springfield (though I really like Rick Springfield) and in the second, no, say, Tom Waits (though I really like Tom Waits). Usually I would rule out greatest hits albums, but I couldn’t do that here, largely because the greatest hits are all I know by Marilyn Monroe and Jim Nabors, and I didn’t want to exclude either of them. I’ve ranked the albums in order of their creators’ non-musical celebrity, from most to least famous.)

  • The Very Best of Marilyn Monroe by Marilyn Monroe

  • Love Has Come For You by Steve Martin/Edie Brickell

  • Tony Perkins by Anthony Perkins

  • 16 Most Requested Songs by Jim Nabors

  • Volume One by She & Him (featuring Zooey Deschanel)

  • Big Problem Does Not Equal the Solution. The Solution = Let It Be. by Crispin Hellion Glover

  • Nightclubbing by Grace Jones

  • Jane Birkin et Serge Gainsbourg by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg

  • The Execution of All Things by Rilo Kiley (featuring former child actors Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett)

  • Kōkotsu No Sekai by Reiko Ike
