Ten Alternate Most Anticipated Books of 2023

(In response to this tweet thread about the appalling sameness of this year’s run of “most anticipated books” lists, I offer ten (though I cheated with two double entries, so technically twelve) of the 2023 books I’m most eagerly awaiting, none of which, as far as I’m aware, have appeared on the lists at any of the usual venues. I’ve arranged them by scheduled publication date.)

  • The King Is Dead: Stories by Walter Tevis (February 14)

  • Journey to the South by Michal Ajvaz (February 21)

  • Fulgentius by César Aira (March 7)

  • No Love Lost: The Selected Novellas by Rachel Ingalls [UK release] (April 4)

  • The Essential Peter S. Beagle: Volume 1: Lila the Werewolf and Other Stories and Volume 2: Oakland Dragon Blues and Other Stories by Peter S. Beagle (May 16)

  • A Love Affair and The Stronghold by Dino Buzzati (May 23)

  • Uranians: Stories by Theodore McCombs (May 30)

  • You, Bleeding Childhood by Michele Mari (July 6)

  • Elsewhere: Stories by Yan Ge (July 11)

  • Rushmore by Kristi Irene McKim (October 5)
