(My tongue is slightly in cheek here, since these are probably my favorite American bands rather than the “all-time greatest.” I made the list in opposition to the tweet below and to most of the replies it got; restricted myself to bands rather than solo artists; and also ruled out any band that seemed like a solo artist in disguise, such as Prince and the Revolution or Neutral Milk Hotel. I’ve arranged my choices in order of preference.)
